What a retirement projection needs
A usable projection combines your current assets, future contributions, a target retirement age, expected spending, growth and inflation assumptions, and the tax treatment of each income source. Changing any single assumption can move the outcome significantly, which is why comparing scenarios matters more than any single headline number.
Growth and inflation are separate
Investment growth and price inflation are independent variables. Entering a nominal growth rate alongside an inflation rate lets the projection show both the cash figures and their purchasing power in today's money.
Tax in retirement
Pension income is taxable as earned income, ISA withdrawals are not, and the State Pension is taxable but paid without tax deducted. Withdrawal order therefore changes the tax bill for the same level of spending.
The State Pension
The State Pension provides a foundation income from State Pension age, subject to your National Insurance record. Checking your forecast is the single most useful input into any retirement plan.
Calculator or planner?
This page is the quick tool: a fast projection from a few inputs, useful for a first look. The UK retirement planner is the fuller workflow — it stores your assets and assumptions, models each income source separately, and adds scenario comparison, flexible drawdown, Monte Carlo simulation and PDF export. Many people start with the calculator and move to the planner once the numbers matter.
