Scottish Income Tax calculator (2026/27)

Estimate Income Tax using the Scottish bands and see side by side what the same salary would cost a taxpayer in the rest of the UK.

Scottish Income Tax bands

Scotland sets its own rates and bands for non-savings, non-dividend income. There are more bands than in the rest of the UK, starting with a lower starter rate and rising through basic, intermediate, higher, advanced and top rates.

Who pays Scottish Income Tax

You pay Scottish rates if your main home is in Scotland for most of the tax year. HMRC identifies Scottish taxpayers with an "S" prefix on the tax code — for example S1257L. Residency, not where your employer is based, decides which rates apply.

Scotland compared with the rest of the UK

At lower incomes the starter rate means Scottish taxpayers pay slightly less than they would elsewhere in the UK. Above the crossover point the picture reverses, and the difference grows as income rises because the Scottish higher-rate threshold is lower.

What Scotland does not set

National Insurance, dividend tax, savings interest tax and the Personal Allowance itself remain UK-wide. Only the rates and bands on earned income differ.

Methodology, assumptions and limitations

  • 2026/27 UK rates, bands and thresholds, verified against primary sources on 21 August 2026.
  • Pay is treated as even across all 12 months (cumulative PAYE), so a mid-year pay change will not match exactly.
  • Class 1 employee National Insurance only — no Class 1A, Class 2 or Class 4 self-employment NI.
  • Scotland is detected from an "S" prefix on the tax code; other UK nations use the rest-of-UK bands.
  • Results are estimates for comparison and education, not a payroll calculation or a tax return.
  • Benefits in kind, company cars, taxable expenses and P11D adjustments are not modelled.
  • Week 1 / month 1 and emergency tax code operation is not modelled — codes are treated cumulatively.
  • This is not regulated financial advice and does not take your personal circumstances into account.
